Reading is the core of education, extracurricular reading is an important Chinese practice form to implement the curriculum standards, enrich, develop students ’language skills. The effectiveness of extracurricular reading has a direct impact on students’ Chinese literacy. However, there are indications showing that the actual situation of today’s students extracurricular reading is not optimistic. Therefore, we need the guide of the New Curriculum Standard, based on the class, and focus on extra-curricular to provide students with good reading atmosphere in many ways, so that students can touch words, feelings speech, practice speech in all directions, a matter of course to cultivate students’ language literacy, so that students can develop reading habits and interests from childhood. We should create all the conditions for students to read, let the reading becomes their habit, let reading, the heritage of human civilization, continues to flourish.Based on relevant literature of domestic and foreign research, through questionnaires and interviews, this study investigates the extracurricular reading situation of high-grade students of three primary schools of Chongqing city, the main dimensions of the survey include the interest and motivation of primary school students’ extracurricular reading, psychological needs of extracurricular reading, habits and methods of extracurricular reading, school factors and family factor of extracurricular reading. Through questionnaires, and interviews with teachers and students, I found a serious shortage of extracurricular reading time of students; bad habits and methods of extracurricular reading; the single contents of extracurricular reading; poor atmosphere of extracurricular reading. According to the problems above, According to the above question, I has made the thorough analysis and discussion. Finally, I raise the targeted strategies and recommendations to improve the extracurricular reading status of primary high-grade school students from three aspects, school, family and society. Such as schools should reduce the burden on students, and give back the reading time to the students; parents should create a good family environment for their children to read; our government should increase the investment, establish and improve the reading ability grading system, standardize the order of book market, and develop the books that suit students with different ages who have different abilities and aesthetic needs to read books.
