The Translation Report Of Shanxi Folk Customs

As a famous province with a long history, Shanxi has abundant folk customs, which reflect the life and culture of local people. However, there are only a few English publicity materials related to Shanxi folk customs, and translation researches on this subject are also needed, so the author takes the translation of Shanxi folk customs from Shanxi Intangible Cultural Heritages List as the topic and attempts to summarize the translation strategies and methods.This report consists of four chapters:Introduction, Process of the Project, Case Analysis, and Summary. It proposes that on the one hand, the translation should comply with the usage of English and target culture. On the other hand, local culture should be preserved as much as possible in the translation. At the same time, three difficulties in the translation of folk custom are analyzed in this report:the translation of proper names, the translation of culture-loaded words and the translation of discourse. The author adopts such methods to deal with the former two difficulties as literal translation, transliteration, transliteration plus literal translation, and literal translation with notes. As to the translation of discourse, the author also gives some suggestions, such as avoiding redundant information, rewriting, etc. In such a way, target readers can not only accept information smoothly, but also have a knowledge of a different culture.
