A Report On Translating Huayuange-A Water Town With Miao Ethnic Folk Customs

The translation of texts of tourist attractions has become one of the focuses for translators.With the vigorous development of tourism industry,increasingly higher standard is required for the translation of tourist texts.Therefore,excellent translation of the tourist texts has become an important way to disseminate the time-honored Chinese history and display the local culture.This thesis is a practice report based on the author’s translation of Huayuange--A Water Town with Miao Ethnic Folk Customs from Chinese to English.The source text taken from http://www.hnsnnews.com involves the natural landscape,local culture,folk custom and historical allusions.Guided by Skopos Theory,with Tour Commentaries for Well-known Tourist Attractions in Guangxi and The Philosopher City:Guiyang as parallel texts,the author of the report mainly analyzes the translation of the source text from three aspects,i.e.culture-loaded words,Chinese four-character expressions and classical Chinese poetry.For the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words,literal translation,literal translation plus annotation,and transliteration plus annotation are adopted.Literal translation and combination are adopted to translate Chinese four-character expressions,and finally free translation and literal translation are used to translate classical Chinese poetry.In the process of translation,some other methods such as amplification,omission,adaptation are also adopted.The translation report indicates that in order to accurately translate texts related to tourism attractions,the translator should adopt proper translation strategies and skills according to different goals to make sure the target text effectively transmit the cultural connotation in the source text,so as to make known the tourist attractions and disseminate Chinese culture.
