Objective: Compared with the vacuum-formed retainer(VFR), to explore the effect of flexible spiral wire lingual fixed retainer(FSWR) after one year. So that we can provide theoretical basis for clinical application. Methods: 41 patients with retainer treatment were included in the research, male 19 cases, female 22 cases, age 15.76±4.73 years, of which 19 patients received FSWR, and the other 22 cases were given the VFR. The models and Panoramic radigraphs of 41 patients with fixed orthodontic treatment after and one year later were all measured, the items mainly include Little irregularity index, Mandible intercanine and intermolar width, Dental arch length, Alignment, Marginal ridges, Interproximal contacts, Root angulation. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 17.0 Software package and Wilcoxon test. Results: After one year, 41 cases had little change in Little irregularity index, Mandible intercanine and intermolar width, Dental arch length, Alignment, Marginal ridges, Root angulation. But these change has no statistical significant(P>0.05), as well as it had no significant difference between the two groups about their variation(P>0.05). But, there are statistical significant in the FSWR group about interproximal contacts(P<0.05). Conclusion: FSWR can effectively prevent mandible teeth to return to the previous position in Little irregularity index, Mandible Intercanine width, Width between molar, Dental arch length, Alignment, Marginal ridges, Root angulation in orthodontic. But, few patients had increased in Interproximal contacts in FSWR group. The two retainers have its features, clinical orthodontist should select appropriate retainer according to the specific characteristic of patients.
