Objective: To evaluate the impact of orthodontic lingual fixed retainers and transparent wraparound retainers on periodontal tissue of mandibular anterior teeth, In order that provide theoretical basis for clinical application. Methods: 29 patients(14 male, 15 female)were selected into the study from the Second Affiliated Hospit-al of Xingjing Medical University. The sample was divided into two groups rando-mly.Treatment group(n=14)was received lingual fixed retainer, and Contral group(n=15)was received transparent wraparound retainer. Follow-up examinations were taken after the retainer were removed one week, one month, three months and six months, respectively. The periodontal condition of mandibular anterior teeth was scored according to the following four parameters plaque index, gingival index, calculu-s index, sulcus sulphide level. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t test. Results:(1)In two groups, comparing the indexes examined after the retainers had been removed 6 months with the ones examined after the retainers had been worn 1 week, the score of plaque index, calculus index, sulcus sulphide increased, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05), but the score of gingival i-ndex had no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).(2)The score of calculus i-ndex of flexible spiral wire retainer group was significantly greater than vacuum-formed retainer group and the difference was Statistically significant(P<0.05)when t-he retainers had been worn 3 months. But the score of sulcus sulphide of vacuum-formed retainer group were significantly greater than flexible spiral wire retainer g-roup and the difference was statistically Significant(P<0.05)when the retainers had been worn 6 months. Conclusion: Although plaque and calculus accumulation mig-ht be increased in patients, the two types retainers caused no significant negativeeffects on the periodontal health. So it is suitable for a very wide range of applica-tions and necessary to remove plaque and dental calculus to maintain periodontal health.
