Investigation Of Clinical Nurses’ Knowledge About PICC Maintenance

ObjectiveTo describe the current situation of clinical nurses’ knowledge about PICC Maintenance in hospitals affiliated to Fudan University,and to discuss its influencing factors.MethodsDescriptive-study design was utilized in this survey. A systematic sampling method was used to recruit187clinical nurses at Zhongshan Hospital、Huashan Hospital、Cancer Canter and Huadong Hospital affiliated to Fudan University in shanghai.A cross-sectional survey was carried out from November to December2011to describe the current situation of clinical nurses’ knowledge about PICC Maintenance by a self-completed questionnaire entitled "clinical nurses’knowledge about PICC Maintenance" with175clinical nurses.Data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics using mean,standard deviation,chi-square,rank sum test,Pearson correlation test.Results1.CVI and Cronbach’s aof the self-completed questionnaire entitled "clinical nurses’knowledge about PICC Maintenance"were0.864and0.996.2.The total score of clinical nurses’knowledge about PICC maintenance was69.44±12.11,the Min was32,the Max was96.26.3%nurses got the score between80and100,58.9%nurses got the score between60and79,14.9%nurses got the score between0and59.3.In all the entries,the questions of the top three accuracy respectively are:" management of catheter prolapsed"(98.29%)、" the available activities of the catheter side arm "(94.86%) and " the available activities of the PICC carriers"(93.71%).Furthermore the lowest two respectively are:" the dosage of liquid seali-ng catheter"(21.14%) and "the kind of liquid sealing catheter"(26.86%)4. Scores of nurses with different ages,nursing age job title,duties,highest level of education degree,whether the member of intravenous infusion group,the time of PICC maintenance independently were analyzed respectively.The differences had no statistical significance.5.Scores of nurses with different affiliated hospitals currently,the cases of PICC maintenance monthly,whether full-time engaged in PICC maintenance,whether under-rtake the knowledge training of PICC maintenance and training times were analyzed respectively.The differences had statistical significance.Conclusions1.The research scales had good reliability and validity and could be used to measure PICC maintance knowledge.But it still needed further improvement.2.The scores of most clinical nurses’ knowledge about PICC maintenance were normal.However it didn’t meet the quality requirements.3.Clinical nurses did good job on health education about PICC,but did bad job on the recognition and management of complications.4.The ages,nursing age job title,duties,highest level of education degree,wheth-er the member of intravenous infusion group,the time of PICC maintenance independently of clinical nurses did no effect of the score of PICC maintenance knowledge.5.The affiliated hospitals currently,the cases of PICC maintenance monthly, whet-her full-time engaged in PICC maintenance,whether underrtake the knowledge training of PICC maintenance and training times of of clinical nurses did effect of the score of PICC maintenance knowledge.6.The nurses need more training about PICC maintance knowledge.It is necessary to strengthen the targeted training about the PICC knowledge and skills. The training contents and methods need to be further discussed.We need to take the corresponding improvement measures,in order to improve the clinical nurses maintenance knowledge.
