【Objective】To describe the present situation of PICC maintenance for tumor patients in the intermittent of chemotherapy in Nanjing and drawing the main factors affecting patients’satisfaction through investigation of PICC maintenance services current as well as patients’evaluation for it. Put forward scientific and feasible suggestions for improving PICC maintenance services combing with interviews with experts.【Materials and Methods】Based on the literature review and experts interviews, we prepared questionnaires by ourselves. In April2011, investigated all the secondary and above hospitals in Nanjing. Selected17hospitals providing PICC maintenance services purposive sampling as sites for implement the questionnaire. From June to August2011, investigators surveyed220hospitalized patients who meet the criteria in these hospitals’cancer ward with convenience sampling, to understand the patient satisfaction with PICC maintenance services. Using Excel and SPSS13.0statistical software to establish a database and for statistically treat, describe the patients’evaluation on the PICC maintenance services, summarize the main factors affecting patient satisfaction. Furthermore we interviewed10experts in December to know their views and recommendations about this issue.【Results】①There are30hospitals provide PICC maintenance services for tumor patients in the intermittent of chemotherapy at present in Nanjing. Relatively, the number of PICC maintenance hospital is larger in the old town, and the suburban is small.②Patients with a balanced gender distribution, their age mainly concentrated in the“50~59”and“60~69”. Most people’s educational level is on junior and high school or secondary school. Most patients need help in daily life,53.5%of patients monthly income are1000~2000yuan,79.3%of patients participated in urban basic medical insurance. Most patients maintain PICC in the outpatient,91.4%of patients had no catheter accidents in the intermittent of chemotherapy. The cost of each time is mostly in40~59yuan. There are46%of patients which round-trip travel time over one hour.③Cancer patients are more satisfied with PICC maintenance services overall(4.06±0.644), higher satisfaction with the attitude, technical and missionary offered by staff (≧4.30), but lower satisfaction with the convenience of traffic, fees and circuits in maintenance services(≦3.79). The main factor affecting total satisfaction is time spent on traffic, both environment and service process also have influence on the totally patient satisfaction.④The degree of reliability of the questionnaire is0.776(Cronbach’s a), exceed the general international minimum credible limits0.70, the questionnaire has high credibility. According factor analysis results, the questionnaire can be divided into three categories, namely, satisfaction with convenient transportation, outside environment of maintenance services and quality of service by medical staff. These results are fully consistent with the three aspects of questionnaire designed before, indicating that the questionnaire has more efficient degree.[Conclusion] The PICC maintenance services for tumor patients with intermittent chemotherapy at present in Nanjing can better meet the needs of patients. The quality of medical staff is higher. The circuits and environments of services have a significant impact on patients’overall satisfaction. In the process of PICC maintenance services, hospital should pay attention to simplify the service links and improving the service environment. And the travel time is the main factor affecting the overall patient satisfaction. So the relevant departments should try to choose the community health centers as pilots to explore the community hospitals to carry out the PICC maintenance services, and gradually establish the city’s PICC maintenance services network.
