In recent years, Beijing region showing growing population density while the status of the land tends to be limited. The key thesis of this paper is how to solve the question the needs of space and function in a residential area reasonably under the high-density development mode, or how to better reach both the balance between the needs of space and function. This paper takes some of open grounds in such typical urban residential quarters as GuoDianHuaYuan, HuaQingJiaYuan, and FuRunJiaYuan in Beijing as object of study. At-site survey was conducted based on theories and methods of environmental behavior studies, involving classification of users and activities, and detailed recording of user groups’behaviors by means of counting and photo taking. On basis of such, functions and utilization of open grounds were summarized for in-depth analysis of the relation between the enclosing、shading、rest facilities、scale、location and frequency of activities taken place. And the influence of such relation on utilization of open grounds is concluded, which is expected to guide the designing of open grounds in residential quarters.The first chapter describes in the the background of crowed population and limited land of Beijing, the urgency is to increase high-density residential outdoor activity space utilization. Currently on the site and space research are part of the residential area of that site requires multi-functional proposal, there is no specific article describes how to multipurpose venue or space research, innovation of this paper is to propose concrete design suggestions.The second chapter of this paper is define the concept of "high-density residential area","outdoor space utilization," and "outdoor space", space for outdoor activities. Besides, the elaboration of constituent elements are described and the theory of exterior space design are introduced.The third chapter elaborate the characteristic of the residential space for outdoor activities is restricted, publicity and territoriality. The manifestation mode of versatility outdoor space is by using the crowd, according to time and by type of activity. The type of activity appears in residential areas to classify to facilitate analysis of the later chapters.The fourth chapter is the key sections of this paper. Research and analysis of Beijing typical high-density residential area of space for outdoor activities is mainly included. Through the high-density residential area of the overall design of outdoor activity space, different aspects of the intended function, staff activities and changes in the characteristics of spatial capabilities to statistical analysis, to give the corresponding research data, analysis of specific factors that may have an impact on the function, summed up relatively high utilization venues possess characteristics.The fifth chapter is also focused on sections of this article, the fourth chapter in the foundation of research may affect the function of the factors of space, depth of enclosed living area, shade, rest facilities, scale, location and so on in the creation of multi-functional space for outdoor activities during the impact. Summed up the different requirements of different types of activities on the site, make the proper function integration, division of space level, increasing details of the deal, versatile control and other design elements meanwhile.Chapter VI of the paper concludes that both sides enclosed and enclosed on three sides theoretically should be the main enclosure multipurpose venue way; the relationship between the main road and site recommendations for the "space integration"; about140square meters-200square meters medium-sized multi-functional space recommend in this article, etc.
