With the fast development of the domestic economy and the population increase, the city construction is facing new challenges. The population increase and the shortage of the non-renewable land resource is becoming one of the most direct and urgent problems. There is an increasingly salient conflict between the infinity of widening city construction and the finite of city land resource. The high-rise residential buildings are the inexorable trend for intensive use of urban land, and are becoming the main mode of buildings in large to medium-sized cities consequently. Nevertheless, with time pasts, the surge of a great quantity of high-rise buildings is also bringing an array of problems. Thus, how to deal with the negative effects brought by high-rise residential buildings is a pressing problem. The open ground floor in high-rise residential buildings is expected to improve the residential environment and living quality of the residents. In addition, it enables a new form of urban high-rise residential buildings, provides more ample space for residential activities. as well as helps to extent the green area in order to make a more beautiful living condition for residents. This study targets on the open ground floor in high-rise residential buildings in Chengdu primarily and other typical southern Chinese cities secondarily, based on the distinct regional differences. We conducted case study on the high-rise residential buildings, performed categorizing analysis, and practically discussed the service conditions of the open ground floor from the aspect of users. In specific, this study analyzes several dimensions of open ground floor in high-rise residential buildings, including the forms, scales, locations, the appropriate ratio, facilities, using conditions and requirement for space. Further, we explore successful extant cases, and demonstrate the problems in the unsuccessful cases. Eventually, we discuss the appropriateness of the use of open ground floor in high-rise residential buildings, and prospect the future trend for the reference of the forthcoming design as well.
