Research On The Evolution Of The Courtyard Housing In The Old City Of Xiamen Port

Courtyard housing is one of the oldest traditional forms of living space, it haslong been the use of the courtyard to meet their own needs and create livingenvironments, residential courtyards represent the spirit of the times in each period ofcultural, economic, ethical, ideological, etc. With the new rural construction,urbanization, urban renewal process and other urban modernization, the introductionof modern lifestyle-related, and the wear of the building itself, and natural disasters, itconstantly changed about the traditional courtyard housing and how to use it. Withthese changes the form of courtyard also maintain, expand or disappear. This articleselects courtyard housing in old city of Xiamen Port as the research object, hoping toimprove the relevant historical data, and provide some suggestions and references tothe current residential design practice and development direction of China.The old city of Xiamen Port has600years of history, it is concentrated piermemory and fishing cultural of Xiamen, carrying heavy Taiwanese geographical andcultural. Under the current transformation of the old city, a large number of residentialbuildings in Xiamen Port has undergone renovation and reconstruction, particularlythose representing traditional form of residential, are continuing to reduce the numberunder the high-density development trends in the city. Currently, the courtyard houseswhich keep itself completely, their retention, evolution and updating, reflecting theadaptability and necessity of the courtyard houses in complex city system.This study is based on field research on the Xiamen Port, and start from threetype included collection type, traditional housing type and mixed type, by selectingand analyzing typical cases and detailed tracing the evolution history process ofvarious types of courtyard housing, explore and summarize its causes and relatedevolution factors. On this basis, we try to get the interpretation of its spatial form,usage and spatial qualities. Finally, we summarize the positive and negative values incourtyard housing, and raised its core values are the flexibility and adaptability of thepresence. If well implanted in modern life, will make the current modern residentialdesign more sustainable.
