In recent years, the demand for voice, data and video business is growing rapidly and the requirement of transmission bandwidth in internet business is higher and higher. Represented by XDSL existing "last mile" access technology has been difficult to meet user demand for bandwidth. Optical fiber networks, with its business transparent, long service life, bearing capacity almost unlimited bandwidth, can adapt to the increasing demand for bandwidth and new business, become the inevitable trend of access network development. In2006, access network model based on XPON was tested and set up globally, XPON network technology becomes one of the main trend of broadband access technology, especially fiber to the home (FTTH) has become the most competitive solution. In this paper, the background of PON technology and development course are introduced first, and then access network based on the PON technology and the current access network based on XDSL technology are analyzed and compared. Access network based on the technology of PON is obviously better than access network based on the technology of XDSL, in terms of stability, security, and transfer rate of network. In addition, two types of PON technologies EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) are introduced and analyzed in detail. Advantages and disadvantages of these two technologies are compared. On this basis, system design of GPON technology in the network access project is made for user access. Detailed design scheme and technical index are given, and implementation of the project in cable construction, integrated wiring construction, network security management and equipment construction have carried on detailed argumentation. Finally, actual operation situation of the network is discussed in detail. Since this project was put into operation, network transmission speed obviously improved, as the adoption of GPON technology as transmission access network. So that the user perception and user satisfaction have further increased, and the network fault is greatly reduced.
