GPON technique (Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network) is an significant technical branch of PON (Passive Optical Network), it is similar to such techniques as APON/BPON and EPON etc. GPON is assumed to be one of the most promising optical access network in the next 2 or 3 years.Also, as the technical standard for broadband access network, GPON has the most typical character of OAM&P and are able to support a lot of services as well as to provide portability and excellent expansibility for providing more services in the future. Due to access network is closest to final user, so its characters will be inclusive of many agreements and services from current TDM and data services to its new applications in the future like SAN, Digital Visual and so on.By means of GEM adapter and other methods, GPON can be able to provide a distinct transition access by adding PON to those services while in no way interfering the current equipments or altering the transport layer, it will be the most powerful technique to fulfill fiber-optical broad band network.Technology and appl ication of GPON is developing rapidly. It has become one of the hot echnology in the world. Shanxi unicom GPON is also actively involved in the testing and building, I had the privilege to participate in the Shanxi unicorn GPON project construction and implementation of the work of the papers from the Shanxi actual projects. The paper first introduces Gigabit-Capable Passive Optical Network (GPON). It summarizes the concept, standards, principle, Protocol, and describes the key technical and advantage at the same time.The paper focuses on GPON access network technology in the application of the user model and its applications in broad band city access network.First It introduces the application of technology in Several models, It summarizes the current FTTx technology, analysis of user access network status and needs of different users. According to the company's needs, we propose Shanxi Unicom GPON network construction strategy and principles, and made its GPON network scenariosNext paper analyzed the current GPON network of Taiyuan unicom.It has given a minute description network plan and design, the construction of access networks,user Capacities measured and calculated of the Taiyuan unicom GPON,etc. It introduced and analyzed the construction of three commercial Taiyuan, China Unicom GPON access network pilot, and concluding GPON experience in the construction of access networks..Final it introduces the Condition progressing of "Light velocity city" in Shanxi unicom.It can be seen GPON is a more feasible future communication access technology.Finally, With the price of fiber and GPON equipment cost fal 1 ing and development of technology, the advatanges of GPON'S high performance wi 11 be increasingly obvious. In the future. fiber access become the main means of access. GPON technology wi I I be more and more usable.
