| Nowadays, the craze for Chinese language has provided an opportunity for the development of Chinese media. As a result, academic and industry studies of the overseas Chinese media have been increasing, while on the other hand, the studies from the perspective of geography are very few. So this paper, which studies Thailand’s Chinese newspapers mainly referring to The Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News, using the theory of media geography, is both of novel perspective and of innovative theoretical value.This study based on the time, territoriality, landscape, scale, audience dimensions of media geography, tries to present the regional features of Thailand’s Chinese newspapers, as well as the social and cultural reasons behind them. And furthermore, it tries to analyse the advantages, problems and developments of Thailand’s Chinese newspapers. Thus, this study is of high realistic guidance and reference to Thailand’s Chinese newspapers, and even all the overseas Chinese newspapers.This research combines quantitative and qualitative research to collect data and conduct descriptive analysis. In the meanwhile, this paper also uses the methods of content analysis, text analysis, case study method, comparative study, to guarantee it being scientific and thoughtful.The research mainly includes timeliness, territoriality, landscape, scale and audience interaction of The Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News. The study of the timeliness finds that this newspaper tries to integrate many expressions of time, to construct the conception of time in people’s life, and to pursuit the timeliness, appropriateness and contemporaneity. In the perspective of the territoriality, we can see the language’s territorialtiy of this newspaper, the use of the local favorable colors, and mixed feelings of the sense of place. From the study of landscapes, we can find that this newspaper presents many different kinds of landscapes, like political landscape, economic landscape, tourism landscape and hometown landscape. And from the dimension of audience, this paper analyzes the audience awareness, the relationship between overseas news and overseas Chinese, the conection between Culture and Education Weekly and new immigrants, to figure out the interaction between this newspaper and its audience.On the basis of the above researches, this paper also puts forword advantages, disadvantages and its development paths. And furthermore, it tries to figure out the better way to inherit Chinese civilization as well as integrate into the local social culture, and a more local and contemporary mode of propagating. And I hope this study of The Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News could act like a guide that can be of theoretical reference and practical guidance to the development of Thailand’s Chinese newspapers, and even all the oversea Chinese newspapers.For last year, I’ve been teaching Chinese in Thailand, which gives me the first-hand experience and understanding of Thailand’s culture. Meanwhile, I’ve been observing and collecting the local Chinese media’s performances. All of these help me make the study more comprehensive and extensive.Nevertheless, this study also has certain limitations because of the samples I pick and research capabilities I possess. The samples of this study are representive in a large degree, but still can not present an accurate image of The Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News. And the errors in the process of the data analysis are inevitable. Apart from this, it may not be quite precise, using the example of Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News only to speculate the full view of Thailand’s Chinese newspapers. There may certainly be some deviations. |
