China is regarded as the birthplace of examination. From imperial examination in ancient China to gaokao(National College Entrance Examination)at present, nationwide examinations always touch the nerves of Chinese people. The mass media also pays close attention to gaokao, which is critical to national and personal destiny. Since the resumption of college entrance examination from1977, how does the mass media present the event? Is there any change in the reporting? What are the factors that influenced framing and how did the framing have effect on the examination? These are questions to answer in the research. The dissertation does a content analysis of China Youth Daily, ranging from1979to2013. This paper makes a research on the news frames of China Youth Daily from four aspects:theme, type, news source and key tone. Making use of Framing theory, the paper divides35years into three periods and analyzes reporting of China Youth Daily in each era, then summarizes the frames diachronically, taking changes in politics, economy, education and technology etc. into consideration since1979.In the past35years, China Youth Daily prefers to use news in reporting, with focusing on test disciplines, interpretation of new phenomenon and ongoing news. It is also open to sources of information and favors neutral reporting. In different periods of history, frames vary with the change of exam policies, media environment, technology and audiences’demand but service, public opinion guidance and peace frames go through the35years. Social changes affects reports in time, form and content; on the contrary, reports will accelerate amendment and remaking of new policies.
