With the rapid development of computer technology and internet, the trend of "Triple play" is increasingly clear. People’s demand for network data transmission became more and more diverse, which leads to the load of packet switching network has increased dramatically. Internet is facing very serious technical challenges. To cope with these problems and challenges, scientists at home and abroad have been actively studying the Next Generation Network for decades, Fractal Network is one of the research results. But due to IP network is currently in a dominant position, Fractal Network couldn’t replace IP network in a short time. By applying Fractal Network’s Vector Switching Technology to IP backbone network (Interface Switching Network) in this paper, we aim to promote the smooth transition from IP network to the Next Generation Network.The paper began with an introduction to the research status of the Next Generation Network both at home and abroad, then made a comprehensive comparison between Vector Switching Technology and the current mainstream network’s packet switching technologies(IP and MPLS); After the introduction of our design idea of how to apply Vector Switching Technology to IP backbone network and ISR(Interface Switching Router) basic structure, key parts of our new defined Interface Switching protocol and also Interface Switching process were described in detail; We analyzed packet switching network average delay by Jackson network modeling, compared Vector Switching and IP forwarding’s performance and analyzed a router’s queue storage space requirements under different loads by using SimpleScalar simulation to get analysis parameters; And then we made the average network delay comparison between IP forwarding network and Interface switching network in consideration of both forwarding ability and power consumption. By the simulation and test on Interface switching network and IP network End-to-End Delay in OPNET Modeler, we verified the feasibility of applying Vector Switching Technology to IP backbone network and the advantage of Interface Switching Network.
