SDN has attractted wide attention of both academia and industry in recent years. The rise of that technology is not only related to the promotion of network technique, but also related to the active participation of telecom carrier, software and equipment providers. For telecom carrier’s IP backbone network, it has the problem low utilization of the link status despite the high cost of network construction. The reason is the traditional network traffic scheduling method used on today’s backbone network is either base on IP routing with no guaranteed bandwidth, nor based on MPLS Traffic Engineering algorithm with bandwidth requirements. Because each of these two methods takes itself as the refeance point to calculate the path to destination, it has no version of the globe network and may not choose the optimal path.With the advent of technology SDN technology, it provides a new way of solving the traffic problems of IP backbone network. Different from traditional network’s architecture, SDN can be treated as a revolutionary change, it functionally enables the network to be accessed by operators programmatically, allowing for automated management and orchestration techniques; application of configuration policy across multiple routers, switches, and servers; and the decoupling of the application that performs these operations from the network device’s operating system.The main purpose of this thesis is to design an architecture based on SDN for IP backbone network traffic scheduing. On the premise of guaranteeing the quality of the network service, it can redue the hardware cost, simplify the telecom carrier’s network and make network’s hierarchy more clearly. Its ultimate aim is to compute and schedule the traffic between telecom carrier’s networks consistently, implement flexible bandwidth on demand, Optimize the network link bandwidth utilization. Finally the feasibility of this program will be verified throuth testing. The paper’s specfic work content is as follows:first, it introduces the practical significance of IP backbone network traffic scheduling and the traditional method of doing that, and points out some problems of implementing MPLS TE at present stage; secondly, it makes some analyse of SDN’s key technology associated with this program, on the basis of this work, it designed the overlay network on the top of physical network so as to realize the traffic scheduling method and also listed the specific scheduling process; finally, by doing analysis of two scenarios in real network environment which need traffic scheduling, it provides the detailed tested methods for these two scenarios and verified them through testing. In the conclusion part, it makes some summary of the main work, points out the achievement, deficiencies and areas which need improvements in this paper.
