With the continuous emergence of new broadband services and increasing demand fornetwork applications (voice, pictures, video, high-definition, data storage and other needs),Bandwith is the "last mile " bottleneck of access network.Copper technology which hasoccupied a large market becomes increasingly unable to meet people’s demand for the Internet. The copper network’s share of market is reduced. FTTH (fiber to the home) is on the rise, andwill bedevelopmentdirection of the access network in future.PON (passive optical network) isprofile, cheap, stable’s new technology, so the industry believes that PON is the solution forFTTH.EPON/GPON are the two major PON technologies, they are becoming increasinglymature technology.Optical fiber access network will enter the era by EPON/GPON.However,the access network environment is complex and diverse, the cost for upgrading the networkfrom copper to fiber is relatively high especially in the old town.So telecom operators want toincrease the rate on the existing copper network. This can save a large number of construction costs for telecom operators. Therefore, there is still xDSL technology market demand.xDSL technology needed to achieve a widerbandwidth and greater stability high-speed access for the user by the existingtwisted-pair.Optical copper access network coexistence will be a common phenomenon forsome time. This paper describes the development history of broadband access networks and itsapplication. Understand the application of FTTx technology in today’s access networks, andfind the application problems (xDSL technology to improve broadband access speed issues,EPON/GPON application problems in the access network, a large number of optical networkmaintenance and management issues and so on).And then propose solutions to these issues. Finally for different application scenarios from every regions, with comprehensive analysis ofall aspects, we develop a reasonable access network planning.
