Up to May 2010, the number of Internet users has reached 404 million in our contry. And penetration rate of Internet reached 28.9%, which is higher than the world average. With the popularity of online games, video on demand, two-way video telephone and other new network services, broadband has become a necessary requirement for next-generation access networks. Owing to the application of WDM, DWDM technology, the speed of backbone networks is quite well. But in the access networks, it has been difficult for the traditional xDSL access users to meet their broadband requirements.PON technology which uses optical fiber as transmission medium is widely regarded as the future of broadband access. Because of the development of the broadband networks market, PON-related technology has been improved rapidly, and it has become a hot field of telecommunications technology. The generation is from BPON (APON) (155Mb/s and 622Mb/s), to EPON (non-standard 100Mb/s), to IEEE standard EPON (1.25Gb/s), to ITU-T standard GPON (2.5Gb/s) to 10G-EPON which has tested commercial development, to 10G-GPON which is standarded in this year.First of all, this paper outlines the origins of PON technology, current status, and the future development. Secondly it describles and analysis the principles and key technologies of PON. And then EPON and GPON technology were discussed in detail and compared. Further, based on PON technology, the access solutions for villas, offices, rural market are introduced. Also it is expounded about PON network planning, construction of telecommunications operators in the network model, bandwidth budget, and ODN key elements of planning. Then taking Yuci Shulinshijia GPON project and Taigu Nonghang EPON project as an example, it proposed and validated about FTTH implementations based on PON technology. Finally, this paper demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of FTTH and FTTB+ LAN, and the feasibility of fiber splicing, This provides a basis for the operator to setup a large-scale deployment of FTTH.
