The newspaper ZhiBao was the second Chinese newspaper appeared in Tianjin, which was founded by foreigners just as the newspaper ShiBao did. Retained as an significant material reflecting the great transformation in Tian China at the turn of the20th century. As its name was called" ZhiBao", The former "Zhi" means the name of a place, as Tianjin was attached to the central government, so it was called" Zhi".(Zhi is the abbreviation of ZhiLi, which means a part of central government in China); The latter "Zhi" means to speak out on a matter of principle. In general, it means to speak out on a matter of principle in the province which belonged to the central government.The political comment had dominated the front page since the newspaper ZhiBao was established the first day. The political comment published in the newspaper ZhiBao was amount to today’s editorial, which was a reflection of the main ideas of the newspaper. There had been numerous intellectuals at that time publishing their articles in the newspaper. For instance, the famous politician and translator YanFu was one of them. His five famous articles were first published in the newspaper ZhiBao, and then triggered huge social repercussions in China. Other newspapers reprinted the five articles after then, due to the comments were widely acclaimed by the Chinese citizens.While China meet its Waterloo during the Sino-Japanese War, great changes had taken place in Chinese society. What’s more, the reform movement of Qing dynasty was carried out after the defeat. China was at the cross of the road which it had never experienced before. The political comments published in the newspaper ZhiBao not only transfer the latest comments of the Sino-Japanese war and demonstrate the national crisis in front of people, but also guide the public opinion to the topic of political reform. The patriotic heart of the newspaper ZhiBao was very sincere, which made it quite unique compared to other concession newspapers. There is much more value on research of the political comment, though there is not enough academic analysis about it at present. This thesis will make a macro look into the newspaper ZhiBao combined with the background of it, then, we will make clear about the value of its political comment and practical influence.
