Outpatient service is an important front line of public healthcare system. Its service quality could directly impact on a hospital’s reputation and reflect overall standard of the service provider. Hence, the concept of building a "digital hospital" was raised to set development direction of Ruijin Hospital for the next15years. In order to achieve digitization, Ruijin has been implementing medical registration system2.0.The existing medical system tends to be less cost effective in handling services from registration to diagnosis with increasing amount of patients in recent years. Hence, a digitized hospital becomes extremely critical in improving medical services and quality of hospital management. This can be achieved by introducing an "one-stop" service model with enhanced information management system. The new service model aims to reduce patient’s waiting time by transforming the traditional way of registration and payment into more automated procedures with usage of multiple self-service kiosks in the hospital. This report analyzes application of hospital’s existing clinical and A&E system by studying self-sustained managerial concept and application of automated information system used by healthcare and other industries. It further elaborates the processes of design and implementation of self-service kiosks system in terms of system architecture, application modeling, design methodology and key information technology involved. This report firstly elaborates the current status of hospital clinical environment. It also analyzes and compares the existing condition and development of local systems against those abroad so as to conclude the importance of self-registration system for hospital management. The report further explains the problems and challenges of existing outpatient registration and billing systems under rapid hospital digitization progress. Based on the above, this report details the design methodology and concept of self-registration system through analysis of certain critical technologies such as the structure of Sybase ASE, TSQL language standards and PPLE bar code printing technology. Application model of the system is built with PB into a C/S structure, which is later introduced together with its detailed text module and courses of actual implementation. The report lastly concludes the research by summarizing the actual impacts on the hospital outpatient service after the project launch and expresses enthusiasm for future research prospects.
