With the rapid development of petrochemical industry, malignant severe accidents related to dangerous chemicals take place frequently, which has raised great concern of international community. In recent years, China adopts a series of measures to strengthen the safety supervision of hazardous chemical materials and the present safety in the production of hazardous chemical materials improves. However, because of weak production foundation, low corporation security management level and primary monitoring technologies, severe and great accidents linked to dangerous chemicals still happen. Therefore, combining with the actual social needs, with natural gas as the monitoring object, this research designs the hazard monitoring system based on ZigBee.Considering the requirements of hazard monitoring, this article proposes its own standards in communication scheme selection and network topological structure. By comparing communication standards’ applications, it analyzes the performance and characteristics of Bluetooth, WiFi, UWB and ZigBee, and the article chooses ZigBee as the communication mode in the whole system after comparing the transfer rate, bandwidth, power consumption, transmission distance and so on. And then this article designs and builds the ZigBee tree network based on the Z-Stack2006protocol stack with the TI company’s CC2430chip as the data processing and radio-frequency emission module, to realize the real-time monitoring of physical parameters such as the equipment’s temperature, pressure and gas concentration. Finally, the article completes hardware and software tests on this platform and each module in this system operates normally, and the desired function is achieved.The system realizes the software and hardware designs of the hazard monitoring system based on ZigBee and solves the existing problems of difficult network cabling, complex line maintenance and troubleshooting, variable cabling to equipment layouts, poor mobility, easy to age and long construction period emerging in the hazard monitoring system. At the same time, this design also poses high efficiency, low risk and high cost performance and other advantages which results in a bright application future.
