Mobile communication, which entered our country at the end of the20th century has made great changes ranging from the simple voice service at the beginning to the current service of high speed data. Mobile phones are expected to provide the voice service and the short message service as well as the data services such as multi-media, video, file uploading and downloading with the anticipation of replacing PC. In2009, China Unicom started the construction of the WCDMA network in the285key cities around China and became the third three mobile network operators with the G3mobile communication network. The WCDMA network is the mobile communication network with the most mature technology industry, the fastest speed and the widest range of global roaming.As is known, it exists risks to make any changes on the current network operation, which conflicts with the requirements of providing stable and reliable network according to the business rules of the operator. But with the development of the economy, in addition to the expansion and reconstruction of the cities, the real environment of the radio access network changes, too. And it is essential to make the adjustment and optimization of the network. After the construction of the network planning, the optimization of the network is needed. An operator’s success is determined by the perfection of the network deployment while the optimization of the network has great significance to the wireless network. However, it is a project which takes long time. And the constant research combined with the improvement of the operating environment is required to enhance the quality of the network operation in accordance with the new demands and changes.The mobile communication network WCDMA is capable of providing faster uploading and downloading service with more options compared with the former mobile communication networks. Because the optimization of WCDMA is different from the former mobile communication network, the network optimization guarantees the quality of network operation. With my own working experience, this dissertation first gives us an overall understanding of the WCDMA network by analyzing the structure of the WCDMA network. Instances of several critical techniques are presented in this section. Then the procedures and details of the network planning and optimization are introduced. The network quality will be enhanced regarding neighbor list optimization and the arithmetic optimization with the help of the invented performance analysis software. Combined with the classic fault cases at work, it ends up with the summary of the approaches for the network optimization by the comparison of drive tests before and after the adjustment. In short, it provides guidance for the optimization of the WCDMA network in the future.
