Judicial report is an important part of the news report about the rule of law, and has significant impact on the construction of the society with rule of law. Due to the highly political authority, strong social credibility and broader social influence, the mainstream media and their judicial reports usually play a leading role in terms of spreading the justice information, monitoring the judicial act, and maintaining social fairness. Therefore, they attract more concentration and even criticism from the public. In the current period of social transformation, contradictions become more prominent, judicial cases happen more frequently, and the social contexts as well as communication contexts turn more complex. Under such situation, the mainstream media and judicial reports have to be confronted with greater professional challenges, especially the trials on journalistic ethics. In view of this, it will provide more practical significance if researching on the responsibilities and performance of the judicial reports from the mainstream media in transition period, and taking more ethical speculation. In addition, the judicial case about Wu Ying is extraordinarily typical in recent years, and is taken as a hot spot in the attention of the public and the news media. From this perspective, it deserves further research.Looking from the perspective of journalistic ethics, this paper mainly talked about the judicial reports and ethical decisions of the mainstream media, and took certain mainstream newspapers and their judicial reports about Wu Ying as the concrete research samples. By combining the relevant theory of journalism and social ethics, adopting both the quantitative and the qualitative analysis, the author conducted the following researches and got some achievements.Besides the foreword and epilogue, the main body of this paper was divided into four chapters:The first chapter was general elaboration for the core concepts and related documentation, such as the concept, connotation and three dimensional communication context elements of the judicial report. Moreover, in this chapter, the author redefined the "mainstream media" and "mainstream newspaper" in China, and then explained the research samples that were selected.Chapter Two was the analysis on the background of the case about Wu Ying. Meanwhile, the author reviewed the details of this case into three sections. In the third chapter, the author conducted analysis, evaluation and comments on the specific performance of the mainstream newspapers’judicial reports regarding to the case. This was an especially crucial part of the paper. In the section of quantitative analysis, the author examined whether these six newspaper samples covered some judicial information about the case on each important point-in-time, and discussed about the differences of those judicial report texts on layout position, manuscript sources, types and contents. In the section of qualitative analysis, the author examined whether those judicial reports were normative enough according to ten ethical standards; and then, with the help of the Potter Box, the author evaluated the ethical dilemmas and value orientation of these mainstream newspapers and their judicial reports. It was found that the mainstream newspapers and their judicial reports on Wu’s case, to some extent, were aphasia and lack of sense of responsibility, which was largely related to the intervention from the political factors. In Chapter Four, the author reconsidered about the media’s responsibilities and the ethical decisions in the period of social transformation. This was the most innovative and significant part of the full text, and was also the foothold of the research conclusions. Specifically, in the transformation period, the mainstream media and their judicial reports need to undertake four professional roles and four social responsibilities accordingly, namely, judicial information disseminator, supervisor, social-public instrument, and social conscience. On this basis, throughout seeking for enlightenment from both the Potter Box and the Bok’s model of ethical decision making, the paper attempted to set up a more realistic ethical decision-making model for the judicial reports in China. Ultimately, the paper took the judicial case about Wu Ying as example again and then analyzed how to make ethical choices when carrying on a certain judicial report in this special transformation period. In all, the paper expects to catch sight of a more ethically responsible press circle and more mature judicial reports in the late transformation period.
