Based on the study of the university teachers’ only child, this paper aims to figureout a way to intervene with the help of social work the crisis exists in the growingprocess of the only child from university teachers’ family in order to rid them of theirproblems. With the basis of theoretical analysis, a sample of a university teacher’s onlydaughter in Wuhan was studied, in which the following four types of crisis were foundout--lack of study motivation, confused in career planning, emotional control disordersand parent-child relationship tension. In order to solve these four problems, structuralfamily therapy and the strengths perspective theory were combined to assess and adjustthe family structure as well as the interaction model of the family members. These stepsproduced positive influence on the family education and parent-child relationship, whichhelped relieve the growing crisis caused by family structure disorder and familyfunctioning lack.Through the study of this sample, several conclusions were drawn:(1) Family is thekey vehicle for individuals to fit in social life and is vital for one’s growth. However,some teachers’ family structure tend to be authoritative one accompanied by specialfamily education patterns, which make it easier for children from these families to havegrowing crisis;(2) This study combined structural family therapy and the strengthsperspective theory and got good results, which showed the exploration and innovation ofsocial work practice. With the help of social work, improvements were seen in theclient’s attitude, the four problems were relieved and the family structure was adjusted tofunction in a better way;(3) Due to its limitation, structural family therapy should bejoint with other therapies like narrative therapy to get better results. Besides, the studyfound out that the growing problems caused by the imbalance in family structure andimproper family education are common, especially in authoritative family with anonly-child, in which further investigations are proposed.
