Objective To identify the visual acuity level and its influencing factors among juniorfemale college students in Hefei so as to provide evidence for developing the preventionand intervention plan. Methods A convenience sample of527freshman and sophomore female studentswere selected from shool of nursing in a medical university. All the participants’ nakedvision and corrected vision were examined with the international standard E visualacuity chart in a room without sunlight interference and the students were required tostand5meters away from the chart. Then the participants were interviewed by aself-designed questionnaire which contained the basic information, family background, eye care habit, daily routine, physical exercise, diet custom as well as their parents’visual acuity, daily routine and family function. Chi-square test was used to compare theprevalence of myopia in different groups according to the paticipants’ homeplace, household income level, parents’ visual acuity and education level, and family function.Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the independent influencing factorsof the female students’ visual acuity. Results (1) The average age of527female college students was (20.91±1.00). Theyoungest of them was18years old while the oldest was24.504(95.6%) participantswere myopic.(2) Univariate analysis showed that wrong pen-holding posture (χ2=6.614, P=0.037), dim light reading (χ2=6.100, P=0.047), eye relaxation by closing eyes or having adistant view (χ2=22.742, P<0.001), reading when walking or riding (χ2=8.102, P=0.017),could significantly influenced the visual acuity of female college students (P<0.05).(3) The multiple factors logistic model showed that wrong pen-holding posture(OR=2.608,95%CI:1.021-6.659) and using cellphone during breaks (OR=4.000,95%CI:1.029-15.551) were significantly associated with an increased risk of myopia, eye relaxation by closing eyes or having a distant view (OR=13.968,95%CI:4.247-45.947) was significantly associated with an decreased risk of myopia. Conclusion The prevalence of myopia among female college students is95.6%.Themain influencing factors of the students’visual acuity include wrong pen-holdingposture, using cellphone during breaks and eye relaxation. The first two are risk factorsand the last is protective factor.
