Objective1. To investigate present situation and characteristics of the workplace violence (WPV) psychiatric nurses in Jinan suffered and the cognitive and attitude of them toward it.2. To investigate the attitude of the Mental health institutions towards WPV and the measures they have implemented.3.To explored the correlation between psychiatric nurse’s general information, organizational commitment and turnover intention and the WPV which the nurse have suffered in the past year. Aim to provide theoretical basis for further research and intervention.MethodsAs a descriptive research, this study adopted the method of cluster sampling. The questionnaire was conducted by412psychiatric nurses who were extracted as the research objects from three mental health institutions in Jinan. The research tool included four parts:the first part was the general questionnaire of psychiatric nurses which collected background information of psychiatric nurses. The second part was the hospital workplace violence questionnaire, to understand the situation of the psychiatric nurses suffered from WPV and the characteristics of it; the cognition and attitude and implement of the psychiatric nurses toward WPV; the attitude and the interventions of three mental health institution in Jinan towad WPV. The third part was the organizational commitment scale, which was used to investigate the status of the psychiatric nurses’ organizational commitment. The fourth part was the turnover intention scale, which was used to investigate the status of the psychiatric nurses’ turnover intention. All statistical analysis was performed by SPSS17.0statistical software. General descriptive analysis, t-test, chi-square test, Pearson correlation analysis and Spearman correlation analysis were applied in this study.Results1.This study investigated412psychiatric nurses from three mental health institutions in Jinan, we collected407questionnaires, including395valid questionnaires, the effective rate of questionnaires was97.05%; the number of male nurses was83, the number of female nurses was312. The average age the psychiatric nurses was33.72±7.85years old.2. Among the395psychiatric nurses,323psychiatric nurses had suffered WPV in the past year, the incidence was81.8%;315psychiatric nurses had suffered verbal aggression(VA), the incidence was79.7%;231psychiatric nurses had suffered physical assault(PA), the incidence was58.5%;60psychiatric nurses had suffered sexual harassment(SH), the incidence was15.2%.3.323psychiatric nurses suffered WPV in the past year,49.5%of the WPV occurred in the day shift,83.6%with co-workers,87.9%occurred in the inpatient department ward,61.0%occurred in the patient’s room, accounting for88.5%of the patients were in the perpetrators.55.70%of the perpetrators were male,20to30years old in the perpetrators age accounted for40.2%, followed by30~40years old, accounting for39.6%. The reasons of the WPV, in the condition of the three top reasons three of the WPV in the order were mental symptoms, the unreasonable request was rejected, the quality of the perpetrators was low. The three most commonly respond the psychiatric nurses made ways in the order:were patient explanation, colleagues help, tolerance to avoid. The influence WPV made on nurses in the order were feeling wronged, anger, fear, decreased work enthusiasm, quiting this job. The continuing influence mainly were feeling wronged, decreased work enthusiasm, quiting this job.4. The psychiatric nurses’ cognition of WPV:71.1%of nurses had heard of WPV,70.9%of nurses thought WPV which was surprised,66.8%of nurses were supported that nurses should not take the attitude of tolerance in the WPV. The nurses thought the primary measure to prevent and reduce the WPV was training and strengthen the response capacity of WPV.5. The top three prevention for WPV which three mental health institutions in Jinan had taken were installing cameras in work area, keeping the light bright at night, security patrol regularly throughout the day.42.8%nurses did not take part in the training about the prevention of WPV,75.9%nurses thought the institution encourage nurses suffered WPV to report at once.63.0%nurses said there was no specific department dealing with WPV in the institution,64.1%nurses thought the institution did not handle with WPV according to the fact fairly, while55.9%nurses thought the institution did fairly.22.5%nurses thought the institution donot want to do anything when WPV happened.42.0%the nurses said when the institution handle with WPV, they paid more attention to the doctor than nurses.6. one way-anova:(1) the difference in the two groups whether the psychiatric nurses suffered WPV among age, working years, scores of organizational commitment, scores of emotional commitment and scores of normative commitment factor, scores of turnover intention and quit intention factor, scores of other work motivation factor was statistically significant (P<0.05).(2) the difference in the two groups whether the psychiatric nurses suffered VA among age, working years, title, scores of organizational commitment, emotional commitment,normative commitment factor, scores of turnover intention, quit intention factor, other work motivation factor was statistically significant (P<0.05).(3) the difference in the two groups whether psychiatric nurses suffered PA among age, working years, position,the scores of affective commitmen, turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation was statistically significant (P<0.05).(4) the difference in the two groups whether the psychiatric nurses suffered SH among the degree of education, employment form, the presence of other professional experience, scores of turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation, leaving determination factor was statistically significant (P<0.05).7. The correlation analysis of WPV:(1) The relation between the frequency of WPV and psychiatric nurses work shift, employment forms,the scores of turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation were positively correlated (P<0.05); while the relation between the frequency of WPV and the one-child, age, working years,emotional commitment were negatively correlated (P<0.05).(2) The relation between the frequency of VA and psychiatric nurses work shift, employment forms, scores of turnover intention, quit intention, the other work motivation, leaving determination were positively correlated (P<0.05); while the relation between the frequency of VA and one-child, scores of organizational commitment, emotional commitment, and normative commitment, the working years showed a negative correlation (P<0.05).(3) The relation between the frequency of PA and psychiatric nurses work shift, hospital level, employment forms, turnover intention, quit intention, the other work motivation were positively correlated (P<0.05); and negatively correlated with the score of emotional commitment, age, working years (P <0.05).(4) The relation between the frequency of SH and psychiatric nurses work shift, employment forms, scores of turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation, leaving determination were positively correlated (P<0.05); And the education degree, work income, other professional experience were negatively correlated (P<0.05)Conclusion1. The incidence of WPV psychiatric nurses suffered was81.8%; the incidence of VA was79.7%; the incidence of PA was58.5%; the incidence of SH was15.2%. 2. The risk factors of WPV which psychiatric nurses suffered include age, working years, one-child or not, employment form,work shift, emotional commitment, turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation and so on.3. The risk factors of VA which psychiatric nurses suffered included one-child or not, working years, employment form,work shift, organizational commitment, emotional commitment,normative commitment,turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation, leaving determination and so on.4. The risk factors of PA which psychiatric nurses suffered include age, working years, employment form,work shift, hospital degree, emotional commitment,turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation and so on.5. The risk factors of SH which psychiatric nurses suffered include the educational background, employment form, work shift, income, and other professional experience, turnover intention, quit intention, other work motivation, leaving determination and so on.
