A Descriptive Study Of Workplace Violence Against Nurses In General Hospitals In Shenzhen City

Workplace Violence against nurses is a significant and widespread public health concern, which not only results in injury, also blocks the nursing development. Workplace violence against nurses and factors have not been studied pretty well in China.Objectives: To describe the prevalence and nature of workplace violence against nurses in general hospitals in Shenzhen city; and to identify the influential factors related to violence against nurses in the hospitals environment.Method: A descriptive design was used .By two-phase sampling, 1552 clinical nurses from nineteen different grade general hospitals in Shenzhen city were recruited. The Modified Version of Hospital Workplace Violence questionnaire developed by CHEN Zuhui was used to collect data. The data were analyzed with software SPSS version 13.0.Results: 1) Approximately 70.6% participants suffered workplace violence during the past 12 months. The rate of abuse, threaten, physical violence,sexual harassment was 68.5%,52.6%,17.9% and 15.2%, respectively. 2)58.9% incidences happened in day-shift, and 36.4% located in wards. Characters of perpetrator were relatives of patients (63.6%) ,male (74.6%) ,middle age adult(54..5%).The leading reasons of perpetration included "low quality of perpetrator", "unreasonable requirement was refused","high medical fee" .The response to workplace violence included "patiently explain", "tolerance and runaway" and "seek help" and so on. The impacts included "chagrin","angry","decreased job passion".3) Logistic regression indicated that "working department" ," hospital grade ", "singleton ", "job position " "education grade" ," the attitude of employer towards workplace violence" ," safety-seat in waiting room "were influential factors and contributed to workplace violence.Conclusion: Workplace violence against nurses was a significant problem in general hospitals in Shenzhen city. Influential factors included "working department" ," hospital grade ", "singleton ",and so on. Further studies should be conducted to more closely examine the problem.
