The contradictions appearing in the transformation of the historic districts havebecome a focus that affects the sustainable urban development. The contradictionsbetween economic development and protection of historical heritage, the functional lagof historic district, the degradation of the ecological environment, the globalization ofcities and the disappearance of local characteristics embarrass the urban development.Whether the few remaining historic districts will be protected and made them adapt thedevelopment of modern cities through transformation design is the important issue forthis paper. The research object of this paper is the protection and transformation design ofcity historical districts, the basic contents of protection and transformation design aresubstance space and humanistic environment. The methods of this research areexplaining the characteristics of historic districts, the meaning of historic districts andtheir influences for the urban development. The relationships between protection andtransformation design and the principles and contents of transformation design areexplained. The problems appearing in the protection and transformation design of ourhistoric districts are analyzed. Historic Districts have become the shackles of urbandevelopment, in order to provide theoretical guidance for solving the shackles duringurban construction, the potential strategic approaches for the protection andtransformation design of city historical districts are explored by combining the successstories of transformation design at home and aboard. In this paper, the author discuss the mélange of old and new cultures, thereplacement of functional districts, the protection of original spatial pattern, theconstruct of ecology and so on. The method and strategy for transformation design areproposed from the two aspects of physical environment and humanistic environment, and a style of protection and transformation design that continuation of the context isthe major, improvement of the living conditions is the foundation and achievement ofsustainable urban development is the target is expected to establish. By analyzing theactual stories, the excavation and use of architectural, cultural and functionaldiversities of historic districts are useful to against the convergence phenomenon inurban design. In affirmation that the transformation design of historic districts haspositive significance for protecting the historic districts, from “changed andunchanged” perspective, the influences of the transformation design of historic districts on the continuation of the urban context are carefully considered, and theprotection and transformation design strategy for historic districts are explored. Afterexpanding the discussion and citing the cases, it concludes that the transformationdesign and protection of historic districts is a dialectical unity and complementary. Thetransformation design is a developing design, and the style of design is the use ofdenial and negation of negation. Under the condition of continuing traditional styles, the results of the transformation design should make the historic districts graduallyprogress to reach a new integrated order. It not only includes the gradual developmentof evolution mode but also involves the new innovation of portion and the reformationof whole demeanor, namely to seek unity in changes, achieve innovation in unity, andpour fresh vigor for the sustainable development of historic districts.
