The development tendency of ocean observing technology is mainly networked andintelligent. But today’s most oceanographic instruments are characterized by verydiverse non-standard software protocols and data formats, which poses seriouschallenges to integration of ocean observing system, including complex wiring anddifficult maintenance and upgrade. These problems could be solved by the design ofthe networked and smart interface module for ocean observation, which has importantpractical significance and broad application prospects. In this paper, the system model of the networked and smart interface module isdescribed on the base of analyzing IEEE1451standard, and then the hardware andsoftware of the module is designed. Lastly, the module’s performance is tested throughbuilding a simple and effective ocean observation system prototype. The main contents and innovation of this paper include:1. The system model of the networked and smart interface module foroceanographic observation is put forward by analyzing the IEEE1451standard, thenetworked and smart interface module is divided into two parts: One is the NetworkCapable Application Processor NCAP, which is mainly responsible for networkcommunications, data processing and task management; the other is TransducerInterface Module TIM, which is mainly responsible for sensor data acquisition, TEDSreading and writing.2. The hardware platform and software system is designed on the base of systemmodel. ARM chip-STM32is selected as the core processor of NCAP and TIM, whichis low-power, high performance and good extensible; DS18B20, SHT75and a GPSmodule are selected to collect some basic environmental data for ocean observation;LwIP protocol and Web technology are used to design an embedded Web server, which could achieve networking and remote observation. Customers only need toclick on the webpage and will be able to query the sensor location and datainformation.3. TEDS technology is discussed, which is the key to achieve the function of "plugand play", and then two necessary TEDS are designed to achieve self-description andself-identifying of trusducer in ocean observing system.
