Wireless sensor network (WSN) has limited lifetime that suffer from limited node energy. Therefore, prolonging the lifetime of network by various methods is a critical research filed. This thesis is based on the research subject supported by NFS (60970112). This thesis contains two parts. The first part proposes a practical topology control algorithmof reserve node and hidden link technic which provide an inherited self-heal function. The dead node in WSN may damage the connectivity; therefore, it is more important to enhance the robustness of WSN. The second part proposes the theoretical relationship between the transmit load and node depth; furthermore, the deduction proved that there is no optimal solution to achieve the balance energy consume and lifetime in the many-to-one scenario. To solve this problem, we investigated a new algorithm to generate a hierarchical, multipath network structure, and proposed a strategy to distribute the packets to multipath while packets are being transmitted to sink against the background of directionalcommunication requir. The proposed achievements of reserve node and hidden link technic had been implemented on existing hardware and protocol stacks, the simulation experiment of multipath network packets distribution optimization demonstrated a desired resultwhich can better support data gathering better.
