From the perspective of industrial applications, the development prospect of wireless sensor networks (WSN) is discussed in this paper. Based on the protocol stack defined by the ZigBee Alliance, a study of the ZigBee network layer is launched. This paper analyzes a variety of existing WSN routing protocols, based on which the Z-AODV-EB routing protocol for balance energy consumption has been put forward, containing RREQ packets’forward probability function and the competition mechanism of multi-path due to their degrees of maturation. The maturity degrees of paths are defined as the sole route selection criteria whose parameters can be adjusted according to different industrial applications in order to conform to specific network requirements. Finally, a simulation platform has been built using the Linux operation system Ubuntu10.04and NS2.34. With the same simulation parameters, the network performances between ZigBee routing protocol and Z-AODV-EB are compared. Although the network latency of the Z-AODV-EB protocol is a little longer, it can get excellent performances on extending the life cycle of nodes and reducing the loss rate of packets, which means a higher transfer rate without losing packets and a wider range of industrial applications of the ZigBee network.
