Wireless sensor network is a network composed of a large number of battery-limited self-organized sensor nodes which are distributed in the region to be monitored. It is generally used in the region where human being cannot get in. The energy of nodes is limited. If node runs out of its energy, the whole network will not run properly. Thus the energy efficiency of nodes is an important problem in the research of wireless sensor network. This paper investigates the problem how to balance the cost of nodes and prolong the effective working time of WSN. The main research works and conclusions are as follows:(1) Propose an energy cost model of nodes based on First Order Radio Model. Calculate the energy cost of each node on the premise of knowing the initial energy and sensing data of each node, the distances between nodes.(2) Propose an energy balance algorithm for balancing the energy cost of nodes and prolonging the effective working time of networks by assigning a time period to each data transmission network. On the foundation of the former algorithm, two approximate algorithms are proposed later. The example and simulation results show that the algorithms are well in a balanced network of energy and prolong the effective working time of WSN.
