Wireless sensor networks are widely applied in various fields of social life as a wireless sensor network can be easily deployed with features of low-cost and simple maintenance. Several applications require connectivity between wireless sensor networks and the Internet. The traditional gateway protocol conversion and protocol bearer access mode can’t meet the more and more widely application requirements of wireless sensor networks. The inter-network interaction is poor as the complex network structure of the high cost traditional access mode. We propose the all-IP access mode to achieve the effective integration between wireless sensor networks and IP network. The all-IP access mode has good network consistency and facilitate the sharing of resources between networks. The design of IPv6-based wireless sensor networks protocol stack and the corresponding data transmission strategy will be discussed in detail. The IPv6-based wireless sensor networks protocol stack is based on the IEEE802.15.4standard. The design of adaptation layer, IP network layer and transport layer are the core content of this paper. In order to implement the auto-configuration of IPv6stateless address, we design the sensor node address mapping mechanism. The data encapsulation and resolution services for IP layer are provided by adaptation layer. The transmission of IP packets over IEEE802.15.4networks is achieved by means of packet fragment reassembling and header compression mechanisms of adaptation layer. The adaptation layer main task is designed to control and manage the services of adaptation layer based on the ported Contiki operating system. Based on the inter-node ping mechanism, the network maintenance task is designed simultaneously. The self-networking task is also designed which has the recovery function from network exceptions. In addition, the uIPv6protocol stack is transplanted and the IP layer task is designed for scheduling and managing the IP services.Taking into account the requirements of wireless sensor networks for data transmission reliability and low power consumption, the energy-efficient distributed reliable transport protocol is designed combining with the adaptation layer fragment reassembling mechanism. Under the analysis of wireless sensor network collected data features, the lossless data compression algorithm is designed based on variable-length encoded, thus improving the efficiency of data transmission. Finally, a network testbed is built to test the IPv6-based wireless sensor networks protocol stack and data transmission strategy. The correctness of algorithms and the integrity of protocol stack functions are verified through the network stability testing, the adaptation layer functional testing and the data transmission performance testing. The test results show that the expected design goals of the protocol stack and transmission strategy are achieved, the network is stable and reliable, the data transmission performance is high, the requirements of practical applications can be met.
