National image is what a sovereign state or nation has shown on the world stage, which also shape the public opinion under the international environment. It is of great importance to the soft power of a country. For the vast majority of Chinese people, they learned about Japan mostly through the local media whose reports may also have great impact on depicting the Japanese image. This research sees into all the Japan-related reports on Global Times, one of China’s mainstream international newspapers, from January1st,2008to December31th,2012. Content analysis method and frame analysis method are used to find out how this newspaper depicts Japan.In Chapter One, the thesis introduces the concept, the theory and the background about this study. It also explained why Global Times is chosen as research objective. In Chapter Two and Chapter Three, the content analysis indicates that Japan image in Global Times is impartially in general, but favorable is much less than unfavorable. Japan image in different aspects presented by Global Times is analyzed in different categories by frame analysis. In Chapter Four, the communication features and the forming reasons of Japan image in Global Times are generalized.Finally, combined with the forming reasons and communication status, the thesis put forward some suggestions about how to look upon the Reports of Japan and their impact on Sino-Japanese relations in Global Times and other mainstream media in China.
