U.S. media mogul Henry Luce (1898-1967) established the LIFE Magazine in1936, which was the most popular and lasting influence in the U.S. history. During the Sino-Japanese War, Luce once took LIFE Magazine as battlefield of public opinion, and Propaganda the Chinese anti-Japanese war, simultaneously reported Chinese cultures and education, and so on. Those reports not only have created the good images of Chiang Kai-shek and the Songs, but also have caused the U.S. to support and aid China, which laid the foundation for the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.Thirty or forty years of the last century, Luce’s TIME Magazine, LIFE Magazine and FORTUNE Magazine ran neck and neck, and have profoundly influenced and changed American’s way of life and thinking, even the views of the world. News magazine, business journals and the picture magazines were Luce’s creations. And, LIFE Magazine and TIME Magazine were once called Sister Publications, whose public opinions were often consistent strikingly, as well as their influences. At the same time, Luce expressed his personal views on LIFE Magazine, for example, the most controversial editorial American Century was published in February17,1941of LIFE. In addition, Time Inc. was the product of Luce’s will, that’s to say, Time Inc. often conveyed the consistent views, and to a large extent were Luce’s will. Therefore, there was a dispute whether his reports were objective and impartial.Author takes the reports about China in LIFE (1937-1945) as the research object, trying to gain how Henry Luce and LIFE to report China and how to Propaganda the Chinese anti-Japanese war by content analysis, frame analysis, discourse analysis these three research methods, further more to analysis the factors that affect Luce and LIFE to report China, eventually probe the cultural factors. In total, Luce always reports China with his personal news views, his political stance, even his individual will. On the one hand, LIFE magazine largely shows values of Luce, and during the war Luce reports on China not only presents a good images of China to the Americans, but also for the U.S. State Department to change its policy toward China, which actively has laid foundation of public opinion to aid China. On the other hand, LIFE shows Luce’s individual will and characters largely, that is to say, Luce takes China as the experimental field of his ideas advocating American spirits including political democracy and social freedom, so he always tried to connect America and China, propagating American spirits and supporting his beloved China. In deeper sense, Luce reports on China with his supports toward the KMT, shaping the image of China, and his solidarity of the Chinese Anti-Japanese War precisely reflect that the dreams and hopes of the Americans, they hopes China follows the American road, and its goals and Western missionaries is the same in essence. The fact is the recognition that Americans for their own cultural identity.
