The research on media's impact on suicide was popular in the United States."The Werther Effect"refers to committing suicides by imitation occurred in the public followed by the news media coverage of suicide.Any forms of human communication which is related with health are called Health Communication. Suicidal behavior is more mental illness,and therefore, the media story on suicide is classifized under Mental Health Communication. The Werther Effect is the core of ethics of Health Communication.This dissertation analyses narrative modes and ethical performance in China according to the guidelines of the media coverage of suicides of the WHO. It proposes some suggestions on how to improve media reports from the perspective of suicide intervention on Health Communication. Chapter One is about the background of this study,purpose, research questions,research methods,and defines related concepts.Chapter Two is Literature Review.It reviews systemic researches on the Werther Effect abroad, the research of domestic media coverage on suicide and the ethics of health communication. Chapter Three is on ethical principles of suicide reports. Since media report on suicide may cause imitation, the World Health Organization proposes some suggestions on this question . Chapter Four discusses and analyses foreign media coverage of suicide. Some of the coverages conform to ethical principles and some not. All the analysis is according to the five Ethical Principles of suicide reports.Chapter Five is about narrative analysis of Chinese media reports on suicide. It concludes four common narrative modes in China: clear direct responsiblity, gathering and watching the stars, romantic death for love, family self―help.Chapter Six reviews the history of media reports in China and analyses questions on media suicide reports from the macro―perspective and the micro―perspective .Chapter Seven is about the suggestions for improvement of Chinese media report. It discusses how to improve the media coverage from the perspective of health communication.Finally, it points out the shortcomings of this dissertation and prospects the future of this study.
