Roller manufacturing is an important part in the steel manufacturing industry. In recent years, with the rapid development of steel industry and the rising demands for roller products, roller production can not satisfy the demands. In the process of roller manufacturing, the lengthy circle and the high cost of the heat treatment crucially restrain the efficiency of the roller production in a direct way. Therefore, under the available resources how to make efficient roller planning and scheduling plans and improve the utilization efficiency of the heat treatment furnace are of great significance for reducing product cost and enhancing the competitiveness of enterprises.Based on the national "973" project (2009CB320601), National Outstanding Youth Fund (70625001) and on the practical data of a domestic roller manufacturer named XJ Corporation, this research is to analyze and study the issues of the company’s roller production planning and scheduling, design and develop corresponding software. The paper includes the following aspects:(1) On the basis of understanding and analyzing the actual production process and its characteristics, the roller production planning and scheduling progress, through careful investigation of the XJ Corporation, a roller production planning and scheduling system was proposed.(2) According to the proposed roller planning and scheduling system, by using Microsoft Visual Studio2005development platform, the roller production planning and scheduling software system was designed and developed by C#. The major functions of the software include production contract primaries, master production schedule, monthly production schedule, and so on. According to the data obtained during the investigation in the XJ Corporation, unit test and integration test were conducted towards the software in order to make the software satisfy certain requirements for functions and performance.(3) In the process of developing software, as to the roller production planning, the factors such as roller delivery, priority, and utilization efficiency were taken into consideration, methods of preliminary selection of production contract, roller MPS planning as well as monthly production planning were proposed, and the corresponding heuristic methods were developed. These methods were evaluated and revised through using the data generated randomly from the software and they were proved to be efficient.
