With the rapid development of science, information technology has been embedded in the medical field deeply. More and more imaging technology changed into digital mode, digital radiology department, digital hospital and digital regional medical platform arc the goal of medical infomationization. The research and implementation of Picture Achieving and Communication Systems (PACS) is becoming a hot spot in the field in medical informationization. Medical images can be captured, displayed, archived and managed with PACS system.Digital Imaging and Communication of Medicine protocol (DICOM) is the international standard communication protocol for medical images. The main function of the DICOM is to enable the medical imaging equipments manufactured by various factorys to connect and communicate with high speed and efficiency. DICOM is the key for PACS system.The thesis discribed the DICOM protocol at first for, the definitions,the theory of data structure, the data code/decode and communication in detail. Then the thesis detailed a implementation of DICOM protocol designed by C++in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) method, including TCP socket layer, DICOM protocol layer, DICOM message layer With these DICOM implementations, a DICOM communication module was designed with preliminary functions of image store, query/retrieve, print and worklist management. At last, the thesis tested the DICOM communication module on the basis of medical imaging equipments and network environment of Shenyang PLA general hospital and presented the data of testing result.The DICOM communication module had been integrated to "Remote diagnostic system for Medical Image" that had been put into use in the radiology department of Shenyang PLA general hospital and the radiology department of royal military hospital of Cambodia. The DICOM communication module realized the data communication between Computer and medical equipment such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging Equipment (MRI). Compute Tomography Equipment (CT) and so on, and it can run well in practice.
