Medical image processing workstation is an important part in PACS, which is themain tool analyzing and dealing with the medical image. There are many mutli-domaintechnologies used in the workstation, mainly involving the computer softwaretechnology, digital image processing, computer visualization technology and medicaldiagnostic technology. The study of image workstation’s key technologies help promotethe practical application and development of PACS, enhance the level of the medicalinformation.Firstly, this paper introduces PACS and the standard of DICOM which is used inthe system. The DICOM file format is fully detailed. And then it proposes a method forreading serial DICOM medical images. This part belongs to the data interface ofworkstation. Secondly, the technology about computer-aided diagnosis(CAD) isdescribed.In the digital image processing technology, image pre-processing and imagesegmentation are related to CAD. There are several classical processing algorithmsmentioned, compared with the results on the medical image. The parallelization of theclassical pre-processing algorithms enhance the computing speed by the graphicprocessor. The three-dimensional reconstruction and visualization technology based onthe seiral images are often used in medical image workstation at present. Finally, thispaper talks about it by surface rendering and volume rendering.In the surface rendering,marching cube is the most typical algorithm, so the paper gives the result ofreconstruction by the method and talks about the problem and solutions of ambiguity. Inthe volume rendering, the basic principles of ray casting and three texture mapping arerespectively presented. At last, combination of these two methods, the volume renderingconsequent is a better one by the programmable shaders.
