After years of development, CCD has been widely used in many aspects, such as security monitoring, space detection, astronomical observation, industrial testing, etc. and its application scope is also extended to the low-light environment from the original visible-light condition. EMCCD (Electron Multiplication CCD), a new type of low-light imaging device, due to its high sensitivity and low noise, the electron multiplying CCD has broad application prospects.This paper presents the structure and working principle of EMCCD image sensor, several EMCDD image acquisition systems are analysed and compared, and a EMCDD image acquisition and transmission system is designed based on FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). The EMCCD chip TC253of TI is chosen as the image sensor, and Altera’s FPGA is chosen as the hardware design platform of the system. EMCCD driving schedules, AD driving schedules, data management module and PAL display module are designed with VHDL hardware description language, custom IP cores are designed to control the system flexibly and efficiently.The Nios system control core based on SOPC is used to control the EMCDD image acquisition and transmission system, and to realize the transmission of image data and control commands between the system and computer.After the completion of the entire design, the system and all the components involved in the system are tested. The test results show that the image acquisition and transmission system works stably and the images acquired are clear, the results satisfy the requirement of design.
