In recent years, as international influence of China continues to rise, many western newsagencies have sent correspondents to or even started dispatched news offices in China, which results in the formation of a special field domain which consists of correspondentsfrom western countries and the social environment of China. That China-related reportingis closely related to the image of the country makes it especially important to study thisfield domain, where relative factors that affect the way of reporting are possible to befound and where proper changes may lead to the improvement of the image of China. Tofind those factors in this special field domain that affect the way of western medias’reporting, the sociology of news is used in this thesis to analyze the reporting ofChina-related disputable events by American medias from political, economic, sociological, cultural and technical perspectives. The result shows that Chinese and western factorsself-demonizing and demonizing factors resulted in the way of reporting together and theeffect from the political factors is especially obvious. The differences of the competitiveparty system in America and the harmonious party system in China have quite big effecton the way of reporting. But the demonization of China is not all done deliberately, someof them is due to profound historical and cultural reasons and are hard to be changed in ashort time. As to the self-demonizing factors, in addition to the cultural factors that arehard to change, the others are mainly about the government’s improper ways of handlinginformation.
