The campus network is a significant component of educational technology resource. Theeducational technology function of the campus network represents on the management toeducational information resource, while the application of educational technology resourcemainly relies on the campus network, the effective management to the campus network couldelevate teachers and students’ application efficiency to educational technology resource, andaccordingly, it is helpful to construct the harmonious and creative campus atmosphere. Atpresent, all of the countries of the world accelerate the development of education information,and the degree of education information has already become a sign of weighing thecomprehensive strength of a country. Exerting the modern educational skill to construct thecampus network and establishing a stable, high quality and multiple service comprehensivenetwork system are propitious to enhance teachers’ diathesis, carry out education forall-around development and are good for cultivating talents with innovative thoughts andcreative ability required by society.With the constant development of national educational information, the gradual expansion ofdigital campus, the continuous enlargement of network scale and the increasingly complicatedstructure, the dependence degree of flexibility, applicability and reliability to the campusnetwork is becoming higher and higher. Consequently, the daily management and monitoringto hardware devices and network system of the campus network is a critical work whichdirectly relates to whether the campus network could run normally and whether the onlineclass could be developed successfully. Therefore, to process effective monitoring to collegecampus network condition is a significant measure of efficiently managing the campusnetwork. After long-term construction of the campus network, there are multiple kinds ofnetwork device types, and the network monitoring software provided by different networkdevice manufacturers has defects of high price, requiring installed respectively, inconvenientstudy and management, etc. The current free monitoring software has features of incompletefunction, different installation platforms, poor expansibility, and uneasy usage which bringextremely large difficulties to the daily monitoring and management of network condition. Through repeated research and practice, this paper puts forward to use the integration of OpenSource Cacti and Nagios to construct the campus network monitoring system.Cacti and Nagios are two different network monitoring software. Cacti has powerful datacollection function whose major usage is data collection and drafting. While Nagios issuitable to monitor whether the service of network system is normal and its function ofmonitoring server’s condition and alarm is strong. By both combinations, the draftingfunction of Cacti could drive the network administrator to check the whole present conditionof network by its network weathermap, while Nagios could make the alarm mechanism ofnetwork efficiently and immediately. Using and integrating the free open source networkmonitoring software Cacti and Nagios to monitor the campus network condition couldimmediately notify the problems presented in monitoring to the network administrator and putforward effective solution. This system actualizes functions of image display, malfunctionalarm, working condition of monitor server to the current network condition. While gettingthe similar functions with business network monitoring software, it greatly shortens therealization cycle of individually developing the network monitoring software and largelysaves the use cost due to the free open source.
