As a direct approach to capture the behavior characteristics of network and operation, Network Traffic Monitoring has been widely applied in many fields such as protocol-designing, network-planning, anomaly-monitoring, traffic-engineering, performance enhancement etc. With the continuous expansion of campus network, Traffic Monitoring plays an important role in the effective management of campus network and enhancement of the network performance.With the rapid development of the network traffic monitoring technology, there are many network companies have developed some commercial traffic monitoring tools and platforms. But most of those commercial products are designed for Internet and very expensive. The change with each passing day of the network forces the network traffic monitoring technology to face many new chanllenges. Before being used directly in campus network management, the commercial products of network traffic monitoring must be amended. Therefore, the management of the campus network is crying for more economical tools of traffic monitoring to secure the normal deployment of teaching and scientific research activities.This thesis based on an in-depth study of relevant technologies in traffic monitoring of campus network, and schemed out an applicable tool for traffic monitoring of campus network. Some mature technologies of network traffic monitoring are used as reference in this tool. The contributions of this thesis mainly include:A data packet capture scheme is verified according to the main characteristics of campus network, and a packet capture method based on NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) is advanced for the network with more than 100M bandwidth. The captured packets are stored in a reasonable data base mode efficiently.Several algorithms of packet classification are analyzed and intercompared, and a new algorithm of AHyperCuts is advanced via the integration of HyperCuts algorithm and ABV (Aggregated Bit Vector) algorithm for the speedy and efficient classification of the packets.A campus network traffic monitoring system hierarchical structure has been designed for our school network. The system integrates monitoring and management in web platform by using .Net components. The popular technology of WBM is introduced that allows network manager to watch the school network conviently via any web browser at any place from Intranet.
