With the rapid development of modern industry and the extensive application of digital technology, more and more applications require precise clock synchronization. At present, the Ethernet clock synchronization protocols mainly include NTP protocol, SNTP protocol and IEEE1588protocol. The IEEE1588protocol is a higher precision network clock synchronization protocol. It’s time synchronization accuracy can reach sub-microsecond, but when the clock synchronization network includes switches,the switches bring greater delay jitter which could reduce the clock synchronization accuracy. IEEE1588protocol introduces boundary clock and transparentclock To solve this problem.To design a switch that support IEEE1588protocol, this thesis mainly do the following work:first analysis of the basic theory used in switch design. Then after compare the two different methods of time stamping and the different between boundary clock and transparent clock, this thesis chooses the system design. Finally this thesis completed the system design include hardware design and software design. The hardware mainly includes the data exchanging module, time stamping module and power supply module. The software mainly includes message time stamping verilog program and the PC test program.This thesis also have done some preliminary test on the system, including data exchange test, time stamping test and message retention time test. These tests show that the switch can simply exchange data and mark the time of the IEEE1588message.
