Reverse engineering (RE),as are relatively in dependent category in CAD,is an important technique in the tendency of digital and rapid manufacture. Current reverse engineering consists of some stages such as digitization,pre-treatment of data cloud,segmentation,surface reconstruetion (SR) and so on. SR is one of the most important. With imageware software to study the s method of SR and analysis precision of the surface.The techniques of coordinate data acquisition,characteristies and application field of different measurement methods were discussed in this paper. Example of a surface,through analyzing the function and fundamental of the software "Imageware",summing up the methods, procedures and experience of Imageware in surface reconstruction and surface detection. With the related concepts of reverse engineering, Battery box was designed. And the methods of constructing non-rectangular surface were elaborated.Precision evaluation of surface reconstruction, including the analysis of surface smoothness and the size of the error between reconstruction of CAD models and Solid models. Some methods of analysis surface smoothness were elaborated in this paper,for example, reflection line, highlight line, isophote and so on. Meanwhile, discussing the error occur in processes of reverse engineering,classifying error combine with the theory of errors, finally establishing the general formula of the error evaluation.
