Reverse engineering is extensively applied in new product development, parts surface replication and examination of the product. It provides a lot of information for raising quality and efficiency in the engineering design, process and analysis. According to the product introduction and innovation, the working process is "object-principle-function-3D reconstruction-redesign" . It plays an important role in the product improvement design.The workflow of reverser engineering includes three key parts: data acquisition, data processing and surface reconstruction, they are studied in detail in this paper respectively. The principle about how to choose methods of data acquisition is putted forward on the base of analyzing and contrasting all kind of measuring methods. Surface data of fan leaf is acquired by three coordinate measuring machine. Data processing includes date reposition, data noise removing , date filter and date smoothing is studied by giving point cloud. By contrasting and analyzing Bezier, B-Spline, NURBS curve/surface in this paper, NURBS curve/surface reconstruction of unpowered fan leaf is discussed as object of reverse design. Smoothing rules and ways of curve/surface are studied. Surface reconstruction of fan leaf is completed by means of imageware software. The chief techniques and mathematics algorithm in reverser engineering are verified. 3D entity model of unpowered. fan is set up under the Pro/E platform. At last, accuracy of reconstruction result is analyzed.According to surface reconstruction of unpowered fan leaf, the result is introduced into CAD model. Product is designed by reconstruction of model, it is realized that original product innovation, produce efficiency is raised.
