In today’s manufacturing industry, product innovation speed is faster and faster. The speed of product development and innovation is becoming the most critical factor to determine the competitiveness of enterprises. Reverse engineering technique is in such a background request to produce and develop together. Reverse engineering is relative to the positive for the project. On the basis of the physical product, sample or prototype, three-dimensional digital models are generated. And then on the basis of the digital model of production, processing or secondary development is conducted to achieve innovation. Reverse engineering is a digestion, absorption and innovation design process, it can fully inherit all the advantages of the original product, and on this basis, further innovation is achieved, which greatly cut short product development cycles, improve the competitiveness of their products.Model reconstruction technique is the most critical link in the reverse engineering techniques. If the reconstruction model is not satisfactory, follow-up works cannot be completed well. The model reconstruction is that in the help of reverse engineering software, measurements data is processed and a digital model is generated, then the generated model is modified, optimized and re-designed. Completion of the model reconstruction work generally needs using a combination of dedicated reverse engineering software and general business CAD/CAM/CAE software, which makes the reconstruction model and the common commercial CAD software link performance very important. The main content of study is as follows:(1) At first, measurement planning and common measurement methods and measuring equipment of data measurement is briefly introduced. This paper focuses on the measuring apparatus and methods used in this subject. At first,3DSS portable3d photography measuring instrument is used for overall scanning, and then the automatic three coordinate measurement machine is used to measure important parts which ensure both measurement speed and precision. By means of pasting label to the measured work-piece, point cloud alignment work can be performed in measurement stage which greatly reduces the work of the data processing phase.(2) The necessity of data processing work is discussed. Several data processing methods are introduced. According to the point cloud alignment method, coordinate alignment method is proposed which is significant to the characteristic line extraction in model reconstruction phrase.(3) The model reconstruction method based on curve and the model reconstruction method based on surface are analyzed and compared. The model reconstruction method based on curve is selected. The method of drafting modeling curves according to the characteristics scan line or the projection curve of the boundary is put forward.(4) Data exchange of the reconstruction model and general commercial CAD software is completed. The reconstruction model is lead into commercial software (CATIA) to achieve the accuracy of the model upgrade. The reconstruction accuracy and surface quality of the model is improved. How to continuously improve and promote the quality of design is also key technique of study content;(5) Using the above data measurement, data processing and model reconstruction methods, reverse designs for the speed reducer box and the electric car brake cover provided by enterprises are performed. The enterprises are satisfactory to the surface and solid models which prove that the reverse design methods proposed in this paper are practical.Reconstruction model is obtained through reverse engineering technique and imported into the common commercial CAD/CAM software. Further processing or mold design may be completed by the use of the processing center. The maximum shortening new product development cycle is significant to improve the market competitiveness through reverse engineering technology,. The subject will focus on the physical model of the design company, mold factory and other units to complete the practical application of reverse engineering technology. Combined with the Henan province productivity center, research and application about reverse engineering is expanded.
