Traditional forward development mode of products exists some problems:long-time cycle, high costs and poor efficiency etc, especially difficult to those products that have complex surfaces. Reverse engineering is a new technology that based on the validated real object or clay model, followed by the data acquisition, data processing, model reconstruction and so on. It can greatly cut down the development cycle, reduce development costs, and improve competitiveness of products in the market place. It has become a new means of enterprise product development, and been in popularization and application.Surface reconstruction is the key step of the reverse engineering, the quality of reconstructed surface would directly affect the character of the subsequent product model. Surface reconstruction method seriously affects the quality of reconstructed surface and reconstruction efficiency. The theoretical algorithms of Bezier curves and surfaces, B-spline curves and surfaces and NURBS curves and surfaces are studied in this paper, face to test-methods of surface modeling smoothness, we have conducted a comparative study, and acquired applied range of various methods. For the accuracy of the model evaluation, a minimum distance point to the surface is to be measured, both respective characteristics and application range of several surface types are also analyzed. Some common surface reconstruction methods are discussed, and a new surface reconstruction method is proposed that Bezier surfaces act an intermediary to achieve NURBS surfaces, which can better solve the surface smoothness and precision issues. The unthickened surface, surface mirror problems, the universal boundary surface wrap, distortions in the transition surface which are caused during the reconstruction are all researched in the article. Through presented eliminating the surface folds, establishing a center of symmetry constraints, adjusting curve of the surface, building equidistant cross-section line and other methods are used to solve these problems respectively, and they are all applied. Research achievement above has been applied in developing the covering panel of certain new motor. The motors have been put into the market, and a good economic benefit has been obtained.
