Research On Freeform Surface Reconstruction Based On Reverse Engineering Technology

Reverse Engineering (RE) refers to an object's CAD model re-construction process according to the data analysis obtained from the fabricated product. Compared with conventional design mode, reverse engineering is applied to the following environment: only product or object model is available, while the drawing of the product is unavailable. Nowadays, RE has been in widely used and aroused more and more attention in many areas such as machinery, aviation, aerospace and medical treatment. This article investigates the key technique in RE using Coordinate Measuring Machine technology.Data acquisition is an important step of Reverse Engineering. The techniques of coordinate data acquisition, characteristics and application field of different measurement methods were discussed in this paper, and then the modeling data measurement method was selected. The technology of registration, data smoothness, data reduction and data segmentation were also discussed. Preprocessing of point cloud data is one of the key technologies in Reverse Engineering.The product CAD model reconstruction of complex surface is one of the most important aspects in Reverse Engineering. So, the principal techniques of surface reconstruction were elaborated in the dissertation. Some examples were given out using the Imageware software to carry out data processing, surface rebuilding and prototype from data points.If the theory and application of Reverse Engineering in the industry design fields are researched in details, the level of industry design would be improved, the cost of the product design would be reduced, the period of the development would be shorten, the competition of the product in international market would be improved. This study enriched the theory and method in the sculpting and design of industrial product, and would promote the application and popularization of Reverse Engineering in industry design field.
