Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a multi-hop self-organizing wireless communicationnetwork system, which consist of a lot of cheap micro-sensor nodes deployed in the monitoringarea. As an emerging network, it has been studied by many researchers. Wireless sensor networksinvolve various fields such as modern sensor technology, communication technology, microelectronics, embedded technology, data fusion technology, distributed informationprocessing technology, etc. They have a very broad application prospects. The wireless sensor network has the advantage of low cost, self-organization, robustness, good real-time property, etc. Thus it is very suitable to the environmental monitoring. However, due to the wireless sensor network subject to resource constraints, limited node energy and thusreduce network energy consumption, extending the network working life has been studiedextensively in sensor network research. The main contribution of this thesis is as follows.First, we introduced the smart sleeping policy for energy efficient tracking in the WSNs, andthe policy balances the energy consumption and the tracking errors. We use a moving-horizonoptimization method to determine the strategy.Secondly, we design the WSN monitoring system based on ZigBee. The main foucuses aredistributed network monitoring principle, node hardware design, network and software design. The experimental results show that the system has a good promotion and application prospects.
